Engineer Mohamed Shamroukh, CEO of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, said that widespread smuggling operations of mobile phones were discovered before the start of implementation of the new system for governance and operation of devices, as about 594,000 “iPhone” devices and 725,000 “Samsung” devices were opened and operated by merchants in Last December 30, that is, two days before the system was implemented.

Shamrock explained during a press conference held today, Thursday, at the headquarters of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, that these smuggled devices entered the country illegally and without paying customs duties, and stressed that the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority will pursue these merchants and take the necessary legal measures to ensure that they do not evade customs duties and protect National economy.

Shamrock pointed out that the new system aims to reduce the smuggling of mobile phones, the rate of which has reached 80% during the years 2023 and 2024, stressing that there is continuous cooperation with the judicial authorities, as 13 smuggling cases have recently been referred for investigation.

He added that the agency seeks to ensure the entry of devices through legitimate channels, which contributes to supporting the local industry and protecting the rights of users.
